Bicycle helmet - A helmet is essential. Make sure your helmet sits squarely on the top of your head and not tilted back at the front.

Clothing - It’s best to follow a layering system whilst out on the bike. Layers can be removed or added to suit the weather conditions. Synthetic / wool fabrics are recommended as opposed to cotton which absorbs moisture and holds onto it. Try to avoid baggy trousers as they may get caught up in the bike chain. If its chilly, an insulating layer will keep you warm and a wind/waterproof layer will protect you from the weather. Set off a little on the cool side as you will soon warm up! Don’t leave the warm clothes behind though, as the weather can turn quickly.

Gloves & Footwear - Gloves are handy to protect you from blisters and prevent your hands going numb in cold weather. The fingerless gloves are quite common and are ideal in the warmer weather. Footwear should be comfortable and stiff soled. Waterproof/ GoreTex shoes are ideal for cooler weather.

Water bottle & Food - Bring plenty of water in a bottle and keep it replenished throughout the day. Try to drink regulary during your ride. For the longer rides a hydration pack is good, as they allow you to drink as you ride. We recommend that you always carry some high energy food ie.choc/nut bars.

Other essentials - Bike lights, bike tools including puncture kit, pump, lock and maybe a first aid kit.
